Giving another quick look at their “Snow White” tale, Relativity Media has released a three minute clip for the upcoming movie “Mirror Mirror” via Parents Connect.

The comedy/action-adventure picture stars Lily Collins as Snow White while Julia Roberts portrays the Evil Queen and Armie Hammer as Prince Andrew Alcott.

Directed by Tarsem Singh, the film sees Miss Collins’ character is “an exiled princess who enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright in a magical adventure comedy filled with jealousy, romance, and betrayal.”

Also starring Nathan Lane, Robert Emms, Michael Lerner and Sean Bean, “Mirror Mirror” is set to hit theaters on March 16, 2012.

‘I’m honored that I’ve been given such a prestigious title,’ Ne-Yo says of new role as SVP in statement to MTV News.

When you think Motown Records, you think of artists like Diana Ross, the Temptations, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson, just to name a few. Now Ne-Yo joins the legendary list of soul and R&B singers that will record under the iconic brand created by Berry Gordy in 1959.

The Grammy Award-winning singer (and co-star of the George Lucas-produced “Red Tails”) has moved from Def Jam to Motown Records, according to a statement sent to MTV News on Wednesday (January 25). Not only that, Ne-Yo will also take over as the label’s senior vice president of A&R.

“I’m honored that I¹ve been given such a prestigious title and trusted with such responsibility; terrified because I know that playing this role in the fashion of one of my career role models, Mr. Smokey Robinson — these are big shoes to fill. But trust, I can handle it,” the singer said in the statement.

Ne-Yo released his debut In My Own Words on Def Jam in 2006 and dropped three subsequent albums with the powerhouse hip-hop label. The singer/songwriter’s fifth LP will now come through Motown, which, like Def Jam, falls under the Universal umbrella. In addition to his artistry and ear for talent as an A&R, Ne-Yo will also bring his Compound Entertainment imprint over to Motown.

“His track record of success at Def Jam will always be a benchmark,” said Universal Republic and Island Def Jam Motown chairman/CEO Barry Weiss in the same statement. “But this move to Motown will provide new and inspiring challenges for Ne-Yo as both an artist and a key member of the new senior management team that is taking form at the label in 2012.”

Senior Vice President of Motown Ethiopia Habtemariam added that signing Ne-Yo, who has written for Rihanna (“Take A Bow”), Beyoncé (“Irreplaceable”) and Mario (“Let Me Love You”), will only bolster Motown’s historical reputation for making great R&B.

“We are committed to discovering, developing and nurturing R&B/soul superstars here at Motown,” she said. “In Ne-Yo we have both a global superstar and arguably one of the best songwriters in music. His presence on the executive team only strengthens our commitment to be the very best in R&B.”

Complicated voting rules shut out songs by Elton John, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige and Pink.

Tuesday morning’s (January 24) announcement of the 2012 Oscar nominations delivered plenty of surprises. Michael Fassbender (“Shame”), Albert Brooks (“Drive”) and Charlize Theron (“Young Adult”) were overlooked in the acting categories, while Melissa McCarthy (“Bridesmaids”), Rooney Mara (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) and Max von Sydow (“Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”) scored surprise nominations. But perhaps no category was more head-scratching than Best Original Song.

Despite the fact that a short list of 39 tracks were eligible for nomination, only two were named — “Man or Muppet” from “The Muppets” and “Real in Rio” from “Rio” — leaving tunes from Elton John and Lady Gaga, Pink, will.i.am, Zooey Deschanel, Elvis Costello and Mary J. Blige shut out of the competition.

Many Oscar-watchers were left wondering why the Academy would opt away from the traditional five contenders in favor of just two little-heard songs. Well, a closer look at the Oscar rule book shows it’s probably less a case of choosing to nominate only two songs than it is simply a case of a single song scoring enough points to secure a nod, and then bringing its closest competition along for the ride.

Oscar nominations are arrived at using a very complicated weighted system in which members of the Academy, voting exclusively for members of their own branch (i.e. actors chose the acting nominees, directors vote for directors, etc.), rank contenders in order of preference. From there, a “magic number” is determined that relies on the number of ballots cast for a category, along with a specific mathematical equation. Ballots are tallied and contenders are eliminated through several rounds in a process that tabulates factors like first-place mentions and so on. Once a contender reaches the magic number, they are an Oscar nominee. (The folks over at EW‘s PopWatch break down the selection steps in great detail.)

So this is how the nominees are determined — with one exception: Best Original Song. In 2009, when the Academy opted to up the number of Best Picture nominees to 10 (the voting body has since altered that number), it also changed the rules for Best Original Song. As Billboard points out, members of the Academy’s music branch now “assign each song a numerical score between 1 and 10, and if no song receives an average of more than 8.25, there are no nominees. If only one song tops the threshold, as clearly happened here, the next highest vote getter secures a nomination as well.”

This year’s Best Original Song category boils down to this: either Bret McKenzie’s “Man or Muppet” or “Real in Rio” by songwriting trio Sergio Mendes, Carlinhos Brown and Siedah Garrett secured a score of 8.25 or better, earning a nomination and pulling the #2 vote-getter into the fray. Simply put, members of the music branch didn’t award any other song, including John and Gaga’s duet “Hello Hello” or Blige’s “The Help” track “Living Proof,” a score high enough to secure a nomination.

But lest you think that this means the category is all but locked, think again. While selecting the Oscar nominees is an intensely mathematical process, picking the winners is much easier. Once the nominations are decided, every member of the Academy can vote in each category and the nominee that receives the most votes wins. Easy enough. And since actors are the largest voting block of the Academy— and would have had nothing to do with the tracks selected to contend for Best Original Song — it’s anyone’s game.

Singer opens up about his split from supermodel wife as he promotes his album Soul 2.

As Seal preps the release of his album, Soul 2, he isn’t shying away from answering questions about his split from supermodel wife Heidi Klum. In two new interviews, the singer opens up about the breakup.

“I think we were shocked,” Seal said on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in an episode airing Tuesday (January 24). “You go into these things with the greatest intentions when you say ‘I do’ and you say ‘Till death do us part.’ Those vows hold value. They are not just words. These things happen. We pretty much said how we feel and made it clear in the release statement.”

With regard to the fact that he’s still wearing his wedding ring, Seal added, “I think it’s just pretty much a token of how I feel about this woman. We have eight years, eight wonderful years together. Just because we have decided to separate doesn’t necessarily mean you take off your ring and you’re no longer connected to that person.

“We will be connected in many ways till the rest of our lives … through our children and also through this tremendous admiration, respect and love that we have for each other,” he continued. “Will we wear the ring for the rest of our lives? Who knows? But right now it feels really comfortable on my hand, so I have intentions of taking it off anytime soon.”

In another interview for the PBS chat show “Tavis Smiley,” set to air on Friday, Seal continues to gush about his ex, and notes that the couple are hardly the first to have a much-publicized split.

“In terms of our love and respect for each other, it hasn’t changed at all,” he says. “When two people feel that way about each other, it is easy — it is easier to make that transition. What one has to do in this situation is remain civil and to retain one’s dignity and to be professional and to understand that we are not the only people on this planet that go through this,” he said. “It is just unfortunately a chapter of life.”

‘It’s an honour every time I hear her voice,’ Adele writes of the late singer.

Days after legendary songstress Etta James passed away from complications of leukemia, Adele took to her blog to recall the great influence the singer has had on her.

“What a lady Etta James was. She was the ultimate original,” she said, recalling her own encounter with the icon. “Her voice was breath taking and her songs are reflections we all recognise in some way or another. It’s an honour every time I hear her voice. I saw her at BB Kings in New York a few years ago, and it was something I will remember forever. Thank you to Etta James. And I send all my love to her family and friends.”

Since the news broke of James’ death, many big-voiced divas have opened up about the influence she had on them. “Etta James was a force to be reckoned with. A true gift to music and a woman of great spirit and courage. Her raw tone and the passion she put forth on a record spoke to me at a very young age and has continued to influence and inspire me throughout my career,” Christina Aguilera said in a statement. “She will NEVER be forgotten, her voice will forever live on and she will inspire talent for generations to come.”

Beyoncé also remembered the “At Last” singer within hours of learning of her passing. She was one in a long line of pop stars who paid their last respects to James, including Hayley Williams, will.i.am and Flo Rida.

“This is a huge loss. Etta James was one of the greatest vocalists of our time. I am so fortunate to have met such a queen,” Beyoncé wrote on her blog. “Her musical contributions will last a lifetime. Playing Etta James taught me so much about myself, and singing her music inspired me to be a stronger artist. When she effortlessly opened her mouth, you could hear her pain and triumph. Her deeply emotional way of delivering a song told her story with no filter. She was fearless, and had guts. She will be missed.”

Just three days removed from the saddening loss of Grammy Award winning singer Etta James, fellow vocalist Adele has paid tribute in the form of a blog post.

The “Rollin In the Deep” hitmaker started off her string of kind words by penning, “What a lady Etta James was. She was the ultimate original.”

The recalling her own personal encounter with Miss James, Adele wrote, “Her voice was breath taking and her songs are reflections we all recognise in some way or another. It’s an honour every time I hear her voice. I saw her at BB Kings in New York a few years ago, and it was something I will remember forever.”

The 23-year-old closed out her remembrance by saying, “Thank you to Etta James. And I send all my love to her family and friends.”

‘Red Lights’ star looks forward to Nolan’s final Batman film, as well as a potential return to the ‘Tron’ universe.

PARK CITY, Utah — Despite photo and video leaks from the set, two trailers, one prologue and plenty of interviews, there are still several unanswered questions surrounding “The Dark Knight Rises.” Chief among them is the rumor that Cillian Murphy, who played the fear-mongering Scarecrow in “Batman Begins,” will return once more to Gotham City when Christopher Nolan’s final round with the Caped Crusader rolls in front of audiences in July.

For his part, Murphy has kept his lips shut on any surprise “Rises” cameos — though given that his psychotic psychiatrist Jonathan Crane appeared very briefly at the beginning of “The Dark Knight,” a return appearance for Nolan’s final Batman movie seems likely. But even if he doesn’t terrorize Bruce Wayne one last time, Murphy is very eager to see what Nolan has in store for the trilogy’s conclusion.

“I’m looking forward to it,” the actor told MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival, where he’s promoting his paranormal thriller “Red Lights” from director Rodrigo Cortes. “Any film that Chris Nolan makes … he’s got a good track record. He makes amazing movies.” “It’s been a huge honor to work with him,” Murphy added. “He’s just phenomenal.”

One villainous turn Murphy was allowed to speak about a bit more freely was his all-too-brief appearance in “Tron Legacy.” The Irish actor had a very small but potentially crucial role as Edward Dillinger Jr., son of original “Tron” villain Ed Dillinger Sr., and it seemed as though he might have a bigger and badder part to play in subsequent “Legacy” sequels.

“Talk about being in a movie for a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ [role],” Murphy laughed when his “Tron” cameo was brought up. “I was just such a fan of the original, and they asked me if I wanted to be in it. I said, ‘Absolutely. Anything you want.’ ”

But as for whether or not he’ll come back for more “Tron,” Murphy remains unsure. “I don’t know,” he said. “It was just a buzz to be in that movie, even for [one scene].”

A clear victory could all but secure the nomination for Romney, but a close call or loss would be detrimental, experts say.

No Republican has ever won his party’s presidential nomination without notching a win in South Carolina. That’s just one reason former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is hoping that when the dust clears Saturday night (January 21), he will be celebrating his second primary win in a row and, in theory, the key to his party’s nomination.

South Carolina was expected to present Romney with his biggest challenge to date, due to its heavy Evangelical population. The man vying to be the Republican Party’s first Mormon presidential nominee was up by anywhere from 11 to 15 points in polls taken in the week before Saturday’s vote, with some predicting he’d get more than 40 percent of the vote. By Friday morning, however, a number of polls had him in either a dead heat with or trailing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Both men were well ahead of former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum and Congressman Ron Paul.

In addition to his eroding poll numbers, Romney suffered a series of unfortunate events Thursday when a further analysis of the vote in Iowa revealed that Santorum had actually won the too-close-to-call Iowa caucus by 34 votes, erasing Romney’s razor-thin eight-vote win and his bragging rights for going 2-and-0. A short time later, Texas Governor Rick Perry abruptly dropped out of the race, throwing his support behind Gingrich.

“If [Romney] wins South Carolina, it depends by how much. If he wins by 15, I would say, yes, he’s [the presumptive nominee]; if it’s in the close single digits, he’s not running at a pace to get the majority of the delegates,” said Columbia University professor of political science Robert Y. Shapiro, an expert in voting and political behavior. “All Gingrich has to do is stay in and if can run close enough and continue to raise money he could keep running.”

Romney, who still has his solid New Hampshire win in pocket, has been taking heavy fire from Gingrich over the past few weeks. The former congressman has taken Romney to task for what he has deemed his opponent’s “vulture capitalist” ways while running the investment firm Bain Capital, where Romney oversaw the shuttering of a number of businesses, resulting in numerous layoffs. Romney has hit back at Gingrich for what he labeled an attack on “free enterprise,” accusing him of sounding like a Democrat in his criticisms.

Larry Parnell, an associate professor and program director of the graduate school of political management at George Washington University, said the net effect of a potential Romney win and a possible shift in Perry voters to Gingrich could turn what he described as a “circular firing squad” of GOP nominees into a duel between the two men. “If [Romney] wins South Carolina, he will still have to deal with Gingrich, and it could slow him down,” said Parnell, a former press aide for the presidential campaign of Democrat Jimmy Carter.

In terms of appearances, Parnell said even with a win in South Carolina, Romney is not likely to declare himself the presumptive candidate, because it could draw even more fire from his remaining opponents. “It’s in his best interest to keep conducting himself the way he has,” he said. “To say that now he’s ready to take on President Obama is just waving a red flag in front of Gingrich.” As long as he continues on the slow-and-steady path of wins, Parnell said, Romney should be able to weather the storms and likely come out on top.

After the now-narrow loss in Iowa and a more convincing win in independent-leaning New Hampshire, observers have been looking to the solidly red state of South Carolina as the first test of whether Romney can convince traditional Evangelical voters that he is the right choice for the party. Parnell said that given South Carolina’s record in picking the eventual establishment candidate, any deviation from that norm (i.e., a too-close-to-call Gingrich finish or win) could cause some serious problems for Romney. A win, however, would prove Romney is a viable national candidate and ease the pressure on him to win over the party’s still-reluctant-to-commit base.

Over the past week, Gingrich urged Santorum and Perry to drop out of the race so conservative voters can rally behind just one “anti-Romney” candidate, arguing that he is the only remaining candidate who knows how to build a national campaign. Even as his poll numbers jumped, though, Gingrich faced another obstacle Thursday when his second ex-wife appeared in an ABC News interview in which she claimed the former speaker had urged her to have an “open” marriage so he could continue an affair with his then-mistress, now-wife Callista.

Both men agreed a solid Romney win in South Carolina could all but ensure his eventual path to the nomination, though a close Gingrich finish could propel the ex-congressman to Florida’s primary January 31.

‘I don’t think he had any qualms about being physical with me,’ actress says of her co-star.

Those of you who treated yourselves to Steven Soderbergh’s action-packed thriller “Haywire” over the weekend know that MMA-fighter-turned-actress Gina Carano‘s unbelievable fight sequences steal the show.

Throughout the course of the film Carano’s character, a special ops agent who seeks revenge on the colleagues who betrayed her, engages in serious hand-to-hand combat with the likes of Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor and Antonio Banderas. Each one of her fight sequences is memorable in its own right, but it is the bout with Fassbender’s character that really packs a punch.

When MTV News caught up with Carano recently during the press day for the film, we asked her to take us through a few behind-the-scenes details of that scene. Spoilers ahead, along with further proof of Carano’s general badassness with the way in which she throws around phrases like “vase smashed in his face” and “choke him out.”

“The Fassbender fight is definitely special,” Carano said. “It took two days [to shoot] and I don’t think he had any qualms about being physical with me after he met me. He was like, ‘You know what? She’s somebody I can throw around and not hurt.’ ”

“It was just a beautiful fight scene. There were so many funny stories because he is a hilarious human being,” Carano said, recalling jokes between takes. “We had a couple different stories that involved a vase getting smashed in his face. I think the bed scene where I choke him out with the triangle choke and then roll over, and then nobody really expects me to shoot him like that. I think that’s been a very powerful scene.”

Getting all glammed up for the Park City nightlife, Christina Hendricks was among the stars partying it up during the Sundance Film Festival festivities on Friday night (January 20).

The “Mad Men” actress joined husband Geoffrey Arend and gal pal Lizzy Caplan in attending the T-Mobile presents Google Music at TAO event held at T-Mobile Google Music Village at The Lift.

The soiree was the first day of a four-day indie concert series to celebrate the launch of the new Google Music Magnified program, which will help recognize and support independent musicians via the Google Music Artist Hub.

According to a press release, “the Google Music Artist Hub allows bands and solo artists to upload original music, set retail prices and sell songs through the Android Market,.The Google Music Magnified program will provide those musicians a chance to perform on music’s biggest stages, in addition to providing opportunities within Android Market to boost awareness for fans. T-Mobile and Google Music will continue to highlight independent musicians throughout the year at a variety of national music award shows and festivals.”

Another Mitt Romney win could provide hard-to-stop momentum going into Florida.

With the field of candidates cut down by half from just one month ago, the Republican presidential nomination could very well hinge on the results tomorrow in the South Carolina primary.

Leading nominee Mitt Romney went into the first contest in the South with a historic double win in the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary. But on Thursday, Romney’s razor-thin eight-vote victory over former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum was essentially vacated when the final tally put Santorum up by 34 votes. The reversal didn’t have any real impact on Romney’s status — delegates from Iowa won’t be decided until a later date — but it robbed him of bragging rights.

With former House Speaker and Newt Gingrich surging in the polls leading up to the South Carolina vote and Texas Governor Rick Perry dropping out Thursday (while throwing his support behind Gingrich), suddenly Romney’s path to the nomination has a few more roadblocks.

In a race that has seen more twists and turns than anyone could have predicted, here are five things to look for in Saturday’s primary:

Margin of Victory
If former Massachusetts Governor Romney posts a decisive, double-digit victory, it could provide the sense of momentum he’s been lacking so far. And after (almost) winning Iowa and decisively taking New Hampshire, a solid win in a Southern state with a large Evangelical voting bloc might signal that the GOP’s traditional base is finally coalescing around Romney. However, if Gingrich can pull off a win — he went from being in a double-digit hole to leading in some polls as of Friday — the race could turn into a two-man duel that lasts well past the next contest in Florida on January 31.

Post-Primary Polling
In addition to being the first Southern contest, South Carolina is the first state with a serious jobs problem on the primary slate. With an unemployment rate of 9.9 percent (versus the steadily falling 8.5 national rate), exit polls could provide a snapshot of what issues are on the minds of South Carolinians and whether they think Romney is the man who can lead the nation out of its economic downturn.

His continuing stumbles on the release of his tax returns and a quip about how the $374,000 he earned in speaking fees last year was “not very much” might eat into his leader status. Exit polls could also give Romney a sharper picture of how much of the Evangelical vote he is drawing and whether he has a chance of siphoning those ballots away from Gingrich.

Where Gingrich Lands
No modern GOP candidate has won his party’s nomination without a win in South Carolina. And though Gingrich was left for dead just last summer, he has risen to the top of the contender heap, currently representing the strongest challenge to Romney. The politically savvy Washington veteran has been merciless in his criticism of his more moderate opponent, while finishing just high enough to stay in it as his potential rivals fall by the wayside. If Gingrich pulls off an upset victory or comes within a few percentage points on Saturday, he could drive Santorum off the map and survive to battle Romney through the next several contests.

Exit polls could also reveal whether the interview aired by ABC News on Thursday night with Gingrich’s second ex-wife, Marianne, had a strong impact on his appeal to female voters. In it, Marianne Gingrich, whom he divorced in 2000 after he’d already begun living with his current wife, alleged that the former congressman had proposed they have an open marriage so he could continue his affair with his now-third wife. Gingrich, who proposed to Marianne before his divorce from his first wife was finalized in 1981, has faced questions during his entire run about whether conservative voters might show distaste for Gingrich’s two divorces and admitted infidelity.

The Colbert Factor
Viewers of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” have gotten a good laugh out of the mockery Stephen Colbert has been making of the influence of Super PAC money on this year’s election. And though his request to run for the presidency of the United States in South Carolina was turned down by election officials, the “Definitely Not Coordinating with Stephen Colbert Super PAC” has been running mock attack ads in the state and has put up some poll numbers that would make former candidate Perry blush. Could his savage satire of big money resonate with some voters and help swing the primary just enough to make Super PACs a talking point?

The Tea Party
The leaderless upstart political movement’s unofficial ground zero is South Carolina, home to the state’s junior Senator Jim DeMint, who is considered the ideological forefather of the Tea Party among elected officials. While the TP has faded somewhat in profile since it stormed the 2010 midterm elections, a recent New York Times Magazine story noted that the defiantly unorganized organization has “had a hard time settling on any obvious alternative to Romney.” If the TP were to assert itself and get out the vote against Romney, it could signal a problem for him in other unabashedly red states.

Another Mitt Romney win could provide hard-to-stop momentum going into Florida.

With the field of candidates cut down by half from just one month ago, the Republican presidential nomination could very well hinge on the results tomorrow in the South Carolina primary.

Leading nominee Mitt Romney went into the first contest in the South with a historic double win in the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary. But on Thursday, Romney’s razor-thin eight-vote victory over former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum was essentially vacated when the final tally put Santorum up by 34 votes. The reversal didn’t have any real impact on Romney’s status — delegates from Iowa won’t be decided until a later date — but it robbed him of bragging rights.

With former House Speaker and Newt Gingrich surging in the polls leading up to the South Carolina vote and Texas Governor Rick Perry dropping out Thursday (while throwing his support behind Gingrich), suddenly Romney’s path to the nomination has a few more roadblocks.

In a race that has seen more twists and turns than anyone could have predicted, here are five things to look for in Saturday’s primary:

Margin of Victory
If former Massachusetts Governor Romney posts a decisive, double-digit victory, it could provide the sense of momentum he’s been lacking so far. And after (almost) winning Iowa and decisively taking New Hampshire, a solid win in a Southern state with a large Evangelical voting bloc might signal that the GOP’s traditional base is finally coalescing around Romney. However, if Gingrich can pull off a win — he went from being in a double-digit hole to leading in some polls as of Friday — the race could turn into a two-man duel that lasts well past the next contest in Florida on January 31.

Post-Primary Polling
In addition to being the first Southern contest, South Carolina is the first state with a serious jobs problem on the primary slate. With an unemployment rate of 9.9 percent (versus the steadily falling 8.5 national rate), exit polls could provide a snapshot of what issues are on the minds of South Carolinians and whether they think Romney is the man who can lead the nation out of its economic downturn.

His continuing stumbles on the release of his tax returns and a quip about how the $374,000 he earned in speaking fees last year was “not very much” might eat into his leader status. Exit polls could also give Romney a sharper picture of how much of the Evangelical vote he is drawing and whether he has a chance of siphoning those ballots away from Gingrich.

Where Gingrich Lands
No modern GOP candidate has won his party’s nomination without a win in South Carolina. And though Gingrich was left for dead just last summer, he has risen to the top of the contender heap, currently representing the strongest challenge to Romney. The politically savvy Washington veteran has been merciless in his criticism of his more moderate opponent, while finishing just high enough to stay in it as his potential rivals fall by the wayside. If Gingrich pulls off an upset victory or comes within a few percentage points on Saturday, he could drive Santorum off the map and survive to battle Romney through the next several contests.

Exit polls could also reveal whether the interview aired by ABC News on Thursday night with Gingrich’s second ex-wife, Marianne, had a strong impact on his appeal to female voters. In it, Marianne Gingrich, whom he divorced in 2000 after he’d already begun living with his current wife, alleged that the former congressman had proposed they have an open marriage so he could continue his affair with his now-third wife. Gingrich, who proposed to Marianne before his divorce from his first wife was finalized in 1981, has faced questions during his entire run about whether conservative voters might show distaste for Gingrich’s two divorces and admitted infidelity.

The Colbert Factor
Viewers of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” have gotten a good laugh out of the mockery Stephen Colbert has been making of the influence of Super PAC money on this year’s election. And though his request to run for the presidency of the United States in South Carolina was turned down by election officials, the “Definitely Not Coordinating with Stephen Colbert Super PAC” has been running mock attack ads in the state and has put up some poll numbers that would make former candidate Perry blush. Could his savage satire of big money resonate with some voters and help swing the primary just enough to make Super PACs a talking point?

The Tea Party
The leaderless upstart political movement’s unofficial ground zero is South Carolina, home to the state’s junior Senator Jim DeMint, who is considered the ideological forefather of the Tea Party among elected officials. While the TP has faded somewhat in profile since it stormed the 2010 midterm elections, a recent New York Times Magazine story noted that the defiantly unorganized organization has “had a hard time settling on any obvious alternative to Romney.” If the TP were to assert itself and get out the vote against Romney, it could signal a problem for him in other unabashedly red states.
