“He came and saw the show and overall is a pretty hilarious guy,” Jonas said. “So it’s been fun, and I hope that I can meet Bobby Morse one day. Stamos actually sent me a picture of he and Bobby Morse to kind of rub it in my face, so I’m a bit jealous.

“[Me and] Stamos? It’s like dynamite,” Jonas continued of their bromance. “We watch a lot of YouTube videos. We talk about music quite a bit. He’s a big music fan. He’s a really good dude. He’s been really kind through the whole process, because he played the role. He knows what it takes to do it. [It's a] cool older-brother type vibe in that sense. He’s everybody’s Uncle Jesse.”

Film Independent Spirit Awards 2012: The Show, The Winners

With another awards show naming its honorees, the 2012 Film Independent’s Spirit Awards took place in Santa Monica, California on Saturday afternoon (February 25).

Hosted by Seth Rogen, the star-studded beachfront ceremony’s big winner was the French film “The Artist” – which took home four trophies including the top prize of Best Feature.

Opening up the ceremony, Rogen jokingly discussed why awards season is a must-have, as he said, “Without awards season we wouldn’t know what a bigot Brett Ratner was,” which referred to the filmmaker’s anti-gay slur made last year while he was producing the Academy Awards.

Meanwhile, triumphant moments saw “My Week with Marilyn” leading lady Michelle Williams garner yet another Best Actress trophy for her growing collection while Jean Dujardin was doted with Best Actor accolades for his work in “The Artist”.

Many were surprised when Aretha Franklin abruptly canceled her planned performance at Whitney Houston’s funeral services last weekend, citing difficulty with leg spasms as the reason she could not attend. Oscars Acceptance Speeches: The Best And The Worst

MTV News looks back on the most moving speeches and those that left us cringing.
By John Mitchell

Jennifer Hudson at the 2007 Oscars
Photo: Vince Bucci/Getty Images

Delivering a good Oscar acceptance speech is not easy. If you over prepare, you seem arrogant, like you knew you were going to win all along, and if you aren’t ready for your name to be called, you’re almost certain to forget to thank your significant other or your film’s director. Some Oscar winners suffer from a serious case of the sniffles and leave audiences unsure what they even said, while others go off on tangents that have nothing to do with movies at all.

In the end, though, it mostly just comes down to having that special something, that je ne sais quoi. And let’s face it, you’ve either got it or you don’t. Below are five stars we think nailed it when they were called onstage and five who, well, didn’t exactly charm viewers’ pants off on movies’ biggest night.

Best
Cuba Gooding Jr., Best Supporting Actor, “Jerry Maguire” (1998)
Gooding’s acceptance speech is basically an exercise in pure joy. The actor leapt to the stage and earnestly thanked just about everyone he’s ever met, starting with his mother and God, and issued “I love you’s” to “Maguire” co-star Tom Cruise, director Cameron Crowe and pretty much everyone else who worked on the film. His genuine enthusiasm captured the crowd and earned him a standing ovation.

Halle Berry, Best Actress, “Monsters Ball” (2002)
History was made when Berry won the Best Actress statue — she was the first African American woman to claim the lead actress prize — and she honored the moment with an emotional speech that she dedicated to “every nameless, faceless woman of color who now has a chance after tonight because this door has been opened.” She thanked the actors and actresses of color who came before her and declared the moment “so much bigger” than herself. Her speech was an exercise in humility and surprise — two things most Oscar acceptance speeches could benefit from.

Jennifer Hudson, Best Supporting Actress, “Dreamgirls” (2007)
Hudson’s took home the Oscar for her very first film performance and delivered a simple acceptance speech that was probably most notable for how humble and truly surprised she seemed to hear her name called. Though she’d been a favorite throughout awards season that year, she seemed shocked when George Clooney announced that she’d won and stuttered and stumbled her way through her speech, but was sure to thank all those she needed to, from “Dreamgirls” director Bill Condon and her co-stars to her family, friends and Jennifer Holliday, who originated the role of Effie White on Broadway.

Tom Hanks, Best Actor, “Philadelphia” (1994)
Hank’s Oscar acceptance speech may well be the only one to have inspired a movie itself. His lengthy speech was marked by some traits we don’t always love — it certainly felt rehearsed — but the actor’s gratitude seemed genuine when he thanked his high school drama teacher, Rawley Farnsworth, as well as a former classmate, who he called “two of the finest gay Americans, two wonderful men.” There was only one problem: Farnsworth was still in the closet about his sexuality. The slip of the lip inspired the 1997 film “In & Out,” in which Kevin Kline plays a high school drama teacher outed when his former student (played by Matt Dillon) wins an Oscar. In a nice turn of events, the always lovely Joan Cusack earned an Oscar nomination herself playing Kline’s jilted fiancée in “In & Out.”

Julia Roberts, Best Actress, “Erin Brockovich” (2001)
Then easily the world’s biggest female movie star, a clearly nervous and deeply happy Roberts delivered a gracious — and long — speech that she wisely prefaced by asking the orchestra director, whom she referred to as “Stick Man,” to sit on his baton. She burst out in fits of laughter throughout and charmed the audience with asides about her director Steven Soderbergh, then-boyfriend Benjamin Bratt and her co-stars and delivered what was maybe the most gracious “thank you” ever to the other women up for Best Actress that year: Joan Allen, Juliette Binoche, Ellen Burstyn and Laura Linney.

Worst
Marlon Brando, Best Actor, “The Godfather Part” (1973)
There are plenty of places for actors to make political statements, but the Oscars really isn’t one of them. The film legend did not attend the 1973 Academy Awards and instead famously sent American Indian rights activist “Sacheen Littlefeather,” nee Marie Cruz, in his place with a 15-page statement to read onstage if he won the prize — which he did. An Academy Awards producer intercepted her backstage and threatened to have her physically removed if she spoke for longer than 60 seconds, so when Littlefeather stepped onstage to accept Brando’s prize, she waved the Oscar away and gave an off-the-cuff speech about the Wounded Knee Incident.

The incident inspired the Academy to alter its rules to not permit proxies to accept Oscar trophies.

Adrien Brody, Best Actor, “The Pianist” (2003)
Some loved Brody’s enthusiastic speech while others took great issue with his onstage behavior. When the actor reached the stage to accept his prize, the first thing he did was sweep Halle Berry up into his arms and plant a passionate kiss on the clearly shocked actress’s lips. While it seemed mostly harmless and Berry was a good sport about the ordeal, many thought it inappropriate as he clearly did not have her consent before kissing her.

James Cameron, Best Director, “Titanic” (1998)
The only word to sum up Cameron’s Best Director speech is “arrogant.” Throughout his otherwise inoffensive speech, the director seemed imbued with the confidence of a man who knew the prize was his before his name was even called, which is fine and dandy and probably not all that overreaching, as his film was widely acclaimed and well on its way to becoming the highest-grossing film ever. However, his decision to conclude with one of the film’s most famous lines — “I’m king of the world”— left a sour taste in the mouths of viewers.

Angelina Jolie, Best Supporting Actress, “Girl, Interrupted” (2000)
Everything about Angelina Jolie’s Oscar evening the night of her win was, well, kind of weird. Not only was the drop-dead-gorgeous actress dressed like Morticia Adams, she brought her brother, James Haven Voight, as her date and the pair acted a little too close for comfort on the red carpet. They kissed and clung to each other and it was totally gross … then she won the Best Supporting Actress prize and thanked her bro, saying, “I’m just so in love with my brother right now.” The whole thing was awkward and the incident haunted the actress for years, until her tabloid drama with current partner Brad Pitt and her humanitarian work on behalf of refugees finally overshadowed the strange behavior.

Michael Moore, Best Documentary Feature, “Bowling For Columbine” (2003)
Like Brando, Moore used the Oscars as a political forum and it was just as inappropriate when he did it. Moore scored the documentary prize for “Columbine,” a powerful film about gun violence in America, but rather than thank those who helped him make the important doc, he used the stage to express his disdain for President George W. Bush and his disagreement with the decision to invade Iraq. “We are against this war, Mr. Bush,” Moore chastised. “Shame on you, Mr. Bush, shame on you.” No, shame on Michael Moore for using the Oscars as a soap box when they are supposed to be a celebration of film.

Taylor Swift Gets Prom Invitation From New Jersey Teen

Kevin McGuire is in treatment for leukemia, and his sister is trying to score him a date with Swift.
By Gil Kaufman

Taylor Swift has a closet full of sparkly, flowing dresses that would be the envy of any girl searching for just the right look for prom. But the singer who spent her prime prom years touring the world has mostly had to assuage her high school dance jones with a headlining gig on MTV’s 2008 show “Once Upon a Prom.”

But now, instead of sharing her big night with 40 dates and the cameras, Swift has gotten an invitation from a Somerdale, New Jersey, high school senior who is hoping she’ll make his dreams come true. According to ABC News affiliate WPVI, 18-year-old Sterling High School football player Kevin McGuire’s sister has started an Internet petition on his behalf asking the country-pop superstar to stand by her brother’s side.

McGuire, who is receiving treatment for a relapse of the leukemia he was diagnosed with five years ago, is getting dating assistance from his big sister, Tori, who decided to try to lift his spirits after he fretted that he might not be able to get a date once his hair fell out from chemotherapy treatments. “I said, ‘What if I got Taylor Swift to go to the prom with you?’ ” she said she asked her brother. “His eyes lit up for the first time since he was diagnosed.” As a bonus, the prom falls on Kevin’s birthday.

So Tori set up the “Taylor Swift Take Kevin McGuire to Prom!” Facebook site, which as of Friday (February 24) morning had more than 77,000 followers.

“All throughout Kevin’s treatment he kept his character intact, remained playing basketball, and even started varsity football as a freshman,” she wrote on the Facebook page. “Kevin is known throughout the community as the High school’s ‘real life SUPER MAN!’ Tragically, Kevin had a relapse, and is now fighting cancer for the second time. Kevin is the kindest, most noble 18 year old a person could even fathom meeting, and throughout his ups and downs Kevin never even questioned ‘why me?’ Nothing, and I mean NOTHING brightens Kevin’s day more than Taylor Swift. Kevin DESERVES more than anyone a special event in his life. And the one thing he wants is to GO TO PROM WITH TAYLOR SWIFT! Let’s make this happen people! TAYLOR PLEASE GO TO PROM WITH KEVIN!!!!!! NO ONE DESERVES IT MORE!”

A Twitter hashtag, #teamkevin, has also become a trending topic, with a number of celebrities hopping on the bandwagon, including Perez Hilton, Travie McCoy, reality star Teresa Giudice and sports giants including Michael Vick, Alex Rodriguez, Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith.

Swift’s spokesperson could not be reached for comment at press time and the singer had not yet reacted to the invite on her Twitter feed.

But many Facebook friends have weighed in on the latest public request for a celeb to accompany a civilian to a public event, including Bernadette Scullin, who wrote, “May your dreams come true!” and Cecelia Denny, who joked, “C’mon Taylor, don’t be ‘MEAN!’ ”

Do you think Taylor Swift will take Kevin McGuire to prom? Leave your comment below!

Oscar Lovebirds: Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez & More

From Justin and Selena to Justin and Jessica, MTV News takes a look at the hottest couples from the 2011 Academy Awards.
By Jocelyn Vena

The Academy Awards happen to be one of the most glamorous nights of the year, filled with over-the-top acceptance speeches and crazy-expensive couture. It can also serve as the glitziest date night for some of the most famous people in the world. With this year’s Oscars only days away, we decided to take a look back at last year’s show and remember some of the most dazzling couples to hit the Oscar scene.

A very pregnant Natalie Portman took the stage on Oscars night last year to accept her prize for Best Actress for her role in “Black Swan.” In between “thank you’s” for the Academy, her family and her fellow nominees, she also thanked her main man, and the father of her son, ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied.

“I want to thank my parents for giving me the opportunity to work from such an early age [and] my beautiful love, Benjamin, who has now given me my most important role of my life,” she told the room. “Most importantly, my family, my friends and my love, thank you so much.”

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez looked like the young A-listers they are when they arrived at the annual Vanity Fair Oscar party, arm in arm. The night was filled with nuzzling, schmoozing and being in love. It also served as the most high-profile appearance the two had made in their time as a couple.

Another Justin and his lady love also dazzled at the same bash. Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel chilled at the party, looking stunning in high-end fashion. The two may have broken up not long after the fete, but the photo remained a reminder of their often-speculated-about romance, before they got back together — and reportedly got engaged — later in 2011.

“True Blood” stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer looked like the grown-up version of Justin and Selena (both guys donned formal wear and both ladies wore blood red).

James Franco and Anne Hathaway may not have been romantically involved, but they were certainly trying their best to romance Oscar viewers as co-hosts. While Hathaway brought her high-energy theater-kid charm to the show, Franco opted for the type of charm we might expect from his “Freaks and Geeks” character Daniel Desario: low-key and a bit confused.

AnnaLynne McCord: Santa Monica Sunbathing Beauty

Basking in the warm west coast sunshine, AnnaLynne McCord took advantage of a break in her schedule by hitting the beaches of Santa Monica, CA on Thursday (February 23).

The Naomi Clark cutie donned a mismatched flowery bikini top and blue high waisted bottoms as she sprawled on the sandy grounds alongside the Pacific Ocean.

The outing comes as we’re just two weeks away from the return of new episodes of AnnaLynne’s hit drama “90210″ – with an installment titled ‘Babes In Toyland’ set to air on Tuesday, March 6th at 8/7c on The CW.

With a preview found in the video player below, a synopsis via the show’s website reads: “Naomi’s sister Jen (guest star Sara Foster) arrives with her son for a surprise visit. Adrianna and Dixon land a meeting with a major movie producer to discuss music on his next film, but are sabotaged by Vanessa (guest star Arielle Kebbel). Meanwhile, Silver gets accepted into New York University and Ivy attracts attention in the underground scene when she switches to a less conventional style of art.”

Oscars 2012 Predictions: Best Supporting Actor

Christopher Plummer is a shoo-in for his affecting turn in ‘Beginners.’
By Eric Ditzian

Christopher Plummer in “Beginners”
Photo: Focus Features

Let’s begin this discussion of the 2012 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor by pouring one out for “Drive” co-star Albert Brooks, who seemed to have a nod all locked up until he didn’t, leaving movie fans around the country to scratch our heads and wonder, Whappened?

While we’re at it, big shout-out to Patton Oswalt, whose scenes in “Young Adult” were not only the most consistently entertaining but whose post-Oscar snub tweets proved the comedian is hilarious even in defeat. And Uggie — the only thing I truly loved about “The Artist” — was either ineligible due to his being a Jack Russell terrier or else cruelly discriminated against. Either way, he didn’t nab a nom.

But we’re supposed to be past the point of whining about snubs, aren’t we? We’re supposed to be focused on celebrating the efforts of five fine supporting actors in five fine films, are we not? The thing is, this category is truly hard to get excited about. We’re not going to go so far as to call the nominees boring as a whole, but we will point out a) approximately 11 people saw “Beginners” in a theater; b) “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” is a wretched bit of magical realism lazily draped onto a very raw episode in American history; and c) it would have been way cooler had Kenneth Branagh been honored for helming “Thor” than for anything that occurred in “My Week With Marilyn.”

And it is with this high praise and these high hopes that we edge toward the Best Supporting Actor category at this year’s Oscar. Here are our picks.

Who Will Win: OK, OK, this is an easy category to mock, especially since the median age of its nominees is 106. But we must say this: “Beginners,” despite no one actually having seen it, is a beautiful movie. It is sweet and moving and complexly told not for complexity’s sake but because life itself is so damn complicated.

Christopher Plummer’s turn as an elderly man who finally comes out of the closet following the death of his wife (only to die himself shortly thereafter) is an affecting one. If I don’t exactly see why this supporting performance is being held up as the finest of the year, if I can point to past Plummer roles more deserving of Oscar love (his recent portrayal of Tolstoy in “The Last Station,” for instance), I certainly can’t begrudge the 82-year-old his win. There’s no doubt that after a lifetime of service in Hollywood, he deserves it.

Who Should Win: Not Branagh and not “Moneyball” star Jonah Hill.

I remain ambivalent about their movies. And certainly not Max von Sydow, who could have delivered the greatest performance in the history of performances and still not rescued the superlatively grating “Extremely Loud.” Then there’s Nick Nolte, whose last Oscar nod came in 1998. He’s never won, and “Warrior” kicked a whole lot of ass. Who are we kidding, though? Given this collection of nominees, the only just choice is the man who’s a lock to actually win Best Supporting Actor: Mr. Christopher Plummer.

Kirko Bangz Plants His H-Town Flag On New Mixtape

‘A lot of people kinda taking our swag too; I just wanted to bring that back and take that back from them,’ Bangz tells Mixtape Daily.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Maurice Bobb

Kirko Bangz

Mixtape Daily Main Pick
Headliner: Kirko Bangz

Representing: Houston

Mixtape: Progression 2: A Young Texas Playa

Real Spit: Kirko Bangz has been progressing quite nicely. Even before his breakout single “Drank in My Cup” began charting on the Billboard Hot 100, the Houston upstart was laying groundwork in H-Town’s mixtape scene. In 2009, he dropped the aptly titled Progression, and now, three years later, he has followed up with its sequel Progression 2: A Young Texas Playa on mixtape site Datpiff.

In this new digital era, where most rap artists occupy the same space on the Internet, it seems that where a rapper hails from has become less important. Still, Bangz clearly is looking to put on for his city.

“People were like, ‘Where you from?’ They thought I was from Cali, Atlanta, stuff like that. So really, with the mixtape and my last single ‘Drank in My Cup,’ I wanted people to know I was from H-Town,” Kirko told Mixtape Daily. “It’s real H-Town: We have stuff for the girls, of course, we got hip-hop stuff, we got storytelling stuff.”

Progression 2 starts off with “Say Hello,” an introductory freestyle over DJ Khaled and Drake’s “I’m On One.” It’s not surprising that Kirko would jump on a track Drizzy has made famous, considering he has drawn more than a few comparisons to the Toronto rapper, thanks to his penchant for both rapping and singing. While Drake is openly inspired by Houston’s screw culture, Kirko truly embodies his city’s sonic characteristics on “Drank in My Cup.” The slow-rolling, lean-inspired cut repurposes Houston’s signature underground sound for radio; it debuted at #96 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 this week.

“A lot of people kinda taking our swag too. I just wanted to bring that back and take that back from them,” Bangz said, never naming who the swagger jackers actually are.

On “Play Me,” KB takes on Drake’s “Trust Issues” and furthers the comparisons. Paul Wall reps for H-Town and shows up on “Knowmtalmbout,” and on “Trill Young N—a,” Kirk stakes his claim in the streets of his hometown.

For the most part Progression 2 keeps a consistent vibe with a number of soul-dripped, screw-inspired anthems. He does switch things up, however, particularly toward the end on the hilarious story-telling joint “Ugly Bitches,” where he recalls all of his less than glamorous sexual conquests.

It’s not flawless, but over the course of 13 tracks, Kirko Bangz shows a pretty solid progression.

Joints to Check For
» “Touch the Sky.” “It was really brought to me, like, it was already on a plate; I just had to put the food on the plate. I wanted a real hip-hop type beat. A lot of people don’t know that I actually can spit a little bit, so I wanted to spit and touch on a lot of things that I thought about. Like a lot of people say a lot of stuff about me, so I touched on those things on that song and kept it real hip-hop.

» “Play Me.” “I feel like a lot of people and girls be trying to play me. I’mma playa, so I had to address that situation, like, ‘Don’t try and play me.’ ”

‘Twilight’ Star Ashley Greene: Three Birthday Wishes

In the final year of the franchise that made her famous, ‘Twilight’ Tuesday shares three wishes for the birthday girl.
By Kara Warner

Ashley Greene
Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage

In honor of “Twilight” star Ashley Greene’s 25th birthday, this week’s “Twilight” Tuesday is three birthday wishes for the actress:

2012 Box-Office Success
“Twilight” fans will make sure the fifth and final film in the franchise, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” will be a success, so we’re not worried about that one. Looking ahead to Greene’s upcoming slate of non-”Twilight” films, we’re excited to see her “saucy” side in teen comedy “LOL,” in which she stars alongside Miley Cyrus and Demi Moore. We’re also intrigued to see how much she’ll scare us (or be scared) in “Apparition,” which opens in August.

More Leading Roles
Although plenty of attention is paid to “Twilight” superstars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, Greene has always stood out for us in the way she plays Alice Cullen with such sweetness and sincerity — not to mention her mental and physical toughness. We’d like to see Greene carry a film on her own, specifically a romantic comedy or romantic drama. We’re thinking something along the lines of Rose Byrne’s character in “Bridesmaids” or a Rachel McAdams-esque romantic drama.

Stay a Role Model
In a world that seems to celebrate the comings and goings of starlets based on their outrageous antics onscreen and off, Greene has handled her rise in fame with poise and class. We appreciate the fact that she has made exquisite and enviable choices when it comes to her red-carpet fashions, which won her a Style Icon Award at the Hollywood Life Young Hollywood Awards. And with respect to making headlines, Greene managed to keep her relationship with former flame Joe Jonas mostly under wraps and free from any tabloid scandal. She did have one nude-photo scandal early on, but the woman recovered gracefully and appears to have a solid head on her shoulders — and we hope she stays that way.

“I went from dying to get a gig, to dying to get the gig everyone wants,” Greene has said of her rise to fame via her role in “Twilight.” “So now I’m in this realm with a lot of highly respected actresses, which is an amazing place to be, but also kind of terrifying. … I’m so laser-focused on my career, because when you’re dealt these cards, if you don’t kind of run with it, then you’re an idiot. You gotta take advantage of what you’ve been given.”

What birthday wishes do you have for Ashley Greene? Let us know in the comments or tweet me @karawarner!

Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.”
